Heating by natural gas is more efficient than using oil

The Facts: According to the Canadian Standards Association, the average efficiency rating of a heating oil system (of recent manufacture) is 85%.  The false notion that natural gas is more efficient comes from studies that compare OLD oil heating systems to NEW gas systems.  Obviously in this case, gas is more efficient.  However when compared to modern oil heating systems, the results are quite different.  A modern oil heating system has a combustion efficiency of 98% - that's to say 98% of the oil used to fuel the system is completely burnt.

Oil heating is out of style - everybody is converting to natural gas or electricity

The Facts: Thanks to constant research and development activities focused on oil heating, manufacturers of oil heating systems have access to the latest technological advances which enables them to provide consumers with state-of-the-art systems - quiet, odourless and clean.  Currently there is a new generation of oil heating systems tried and tested with a 90% rating, without condensation.  These systems come equipped with an internal conduit which exhausts combustion gases, as well as an external conduit which draws in the exterior air needed for combustion.  No chimney is required.  Proud of this new technology, today's oil system manufacturers look forward to a bright future.

Converting from oil to natural gas means big savings

The Facts: The Consumer Energy Counsel, an independent consumer protection group, states that - "Converting from oil to natural gas is one of the least effective ways to reduce energy costs.  In fact, energy costs can increase by up to two times as much by converting from oil to gas.  For the great majority of oil heating consumers, conversion is far from the best solution."

In Canada, natural gas or electricity supply is more certain than the supply of heating oil

The Facts: Canada is a country rich in petroleum resources and new discoveries continue to occur regularly.  Over the next few years, as mega-project exploitation moves into the production phase, Canada's petroleum sector will become less and less dependent on foreign supplies.

Natural gas heating is cleaner than oil heating

The Facts: Since the introduction of the new generation of oil heating systems, smoke and soot are things of the past.  Thanks to their excellent combustion efficiency and their overall higher efficiency rating, these systems are also cleaner than gas systems.  Furthermore, oil is safer that natural gas.  As opposed to gas, you can actually see oil, which is also the safest combustible to handle and deliver to your home.

Natural gas is more environment-friendly

The Facts: The difference between the quantity of carbon wastes of a natural gas system compared to an oil system is negligible. Neither combustible has a negative impact on the environment.  Like other industries, the petroleum sector assumes its responsibilities concerning the reduction of harmful emissions. According to petroleum industry experts, the use of improved oil heating appliances is one of the best ways to contribute to the protection of the environment.
